SUPPLY Vendor Highlight: Pariah5k

PATTERN’s 2019 SUPPLY tradeshow (previously known as the STREETExPO) took place on October 5. SUPPLY is the only streetwear and contemporary fashion trade show in Central Indiana and PATTERN is highlighting just a handful of the brands that were showcased at that show. SUPPLY aims to serve as a conduit between brands, buyers, designers and fashion lovers continuing to bring attention to Indy’s fashion aspirations and talent. To learn more about the event, visit the SUPPLY info page here. SUPPLY will be back in August of 2020.

Congratulations to designer Barbara Riordan of Pariah5K for winning Brand of the Year at this year’s SUPPLY!

Landess Hutson: What inspired you to start your brand?

Barbara Riordan: I have been making my own clothes since I was six years old. I have received compliments and been stopped on the streets by people for years, so I thought I’d try and develop a line.

LH: What is the message behind your brand? What do you want people to think about/feel when they see your brand?

BR: My message: I like classic, flattering silhouettes with vibrant often whimsical prints. My product is Made in the USA, I don’t want to exploit people in poorer countries by using overseas factories that abuse their employees and pay them $30 a month. I can oversee the production if done domestically and I would like to give my neighbors a job as well.  Many of my designs are made of recycled content fabrics. I want people to see this brand as ethical and responsible as well as fashionable.

LH: What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?

BR: For those just starting out, you have to have a lot of patience. Things don’t happen over night and you need to really research the business side of things. Having a cool idea isn’t enough.

LH: What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve had to overcome?

BR: I wanted to get wholesale accounts with stores, this is the most economical starting out and the best way to meet customers. It seems store buyers say they want something new but they want a sure thing. They want you to bring your audience with you.

LH: What has been your biggest accomplishment as a designer/brand owner?

BR:I’m pretty excited that I sold a couple of items at SUPPLY. My price point for my Made in USA product is rather high. If strangers are willing to trust me to buy my products and they think the product is worth the money, I feel pretty good about that.

LH: What is your favorite part about owning your own brand?

BR: I love shopping for the fabrics and coming up with a design. My favorite part is seeing it come to life.

LH: How do you see your brand evolving in the future?

BR: I hope to reach a bigger audience and do more Pop-Ups.

LH: What was your biggest takeaway from SUPPLY?

BR: SUPPLY showed me that my customer can be anywhere; Pop-Ups are a great way to interact with your customer.
