People of PATTERN: Destiny Taylor

What do your friends call you?

My friends call me Destiny Taylor and sometimes Des, but I hate that shortened name – it’s just them being lazy.

How old are you (if you don’t mind me asking!)?

I’m 21 years old physically, but a too-wise-for-her-own-good-13-year-old-in-the-soul.

Where are you from?

I’m from Gary, IN. No I don’t know Michael Jackson.

Which neighborhood do you live in right now?

I live on the far east side of Indianapolis and Downtown. My home is my gran’s house and my mom’s house – I have two homes.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a video blogger on YouTube (Destiny Taylor xo). I produce beauty, fashion and lifestyle related content. Also, I’m currently a budding Public Relations, social media and creative communications professional. I’m finishing my PR undergraduate degree at Ball State.

What do you do as a creative outlet?

Definitely YouTube. I spend long hours developing digital stories. I sometimes make music, but I really love helping the awesome local artists in Indy push their platforms beyond Indiana.

What’s the most interesting thing happening in Indy right now?

The number of creatives that are popping up everywhere! The artists – Ejaaz, Poindexter, Ashley Chew – who have been doing their thing for years and are getting recognized across the country, have inspired our city to express itself.

Favorite local brewery, distillery or winery? (Or if not a drinker, then favorite eatery.)

I don’t drink, but I love eating at Waffle House. Specifically the one on Pendleton Pike!

Last trip you took?

I lived in New York over the summer for an internship with CRWN Magazine. I was the editor of five sections in the magazine, so I got the full professional New York experience. I got to work in the Empire State Building and attend swanky networking events. Definitely a HUGE culture shock coming from Indy, but it made me a better Hoosier at heart.

How did you first hear about PATTERN?

When my boyfriend Ejaaz was on the cover of the Music Issue. I was like “Wow, my man’s on the cover of a magazine!” My introduction to PATTERN was actually the release party. It was so cool, all of Indy’s hidden gems in one place just embracing each other. I told myself I was going to work to become a part of PATTERN, and look at me now mama! I’m doing social media for the Naptown Queen (Polina).

What was your favorite PATTERN meetup and why?

Definitely the Black Culture and Beyonce event. It was the first open discussion I attended that covered such a controversial topic. I actually got to help plan the event and felt so honored to bring such an event to the Indy creative scene. It was definitely risky and some of the panelists didn’t have the grace to handle such a delicate topic, but overall it was a wonderful educational experience for everyone who participated.

What event are you looking forward to attending this month?

I’m looking forward to the PATTERN’s October meetup which will be a Blogger Panel. I’ll be one of the panelists and I’m excited to share with everyone how I turned an interest into a hobby and a hobby into a source of income.
