Discovering Broadway Inc. to Host “Ever After” Writer’s Retreat

The Hotel Carmichael in Carmel City Center.

Local nonprofit and theatre education program Discovering Broadway Inc. has announced that new musical Ever After will be workshopped later this month as a part of their Writer’s Retreat program. The creative team and cast of the musical will present songs in concert from the show on Sunday, May 23rd, at 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM in the brand-new Feinstein’s Cabaret, located in the Hotel Carmichael in Carmel City Center.

Ever After will become the second show to participate in the Discovering Broadway Inc. Writer’s Retreat program, following the success of a similar retreat in February for the new musical The Devil Wears Prada.

The production will star veteran Broadway performers Christy Altomare (Anastasia, Carrie) and Corey Cott (Newsies, Bandstand).

Based on the 1998 Twentieth Century Fox film directed by Andy Tennant and starring Drew Barrymore and Anjelica Huston, Ever After features music by Zina Goldrich and lyrics by Marcy Heisler. The pair previously collaborated on Drama Desk-nominated musical Dear Edwina. Marlo Hunter will direct the production, with book by Marcy Heisler and Kate Weatherhead.

Weatherhead, who participated in February’s The Devil Wears Prada retreat, is excited to work alongside Discovering Broadway Inc. a second time.

“It’s a thrill to return to Carmel to collaborate with another phenomenal team of theater artists,” Weatherhead said. “Discovering Broadway is fast becoming a creative home away from home.

“Ever After is the salve we all need right now — a witty, smart and romantic new musical comedy with a lush and layered score. There’s no greater gift for a show in development than a safe, supportive space —and Discovering Broadway is just that,” director Hunter added.
