Stay Tuned: February 2019

Folk duo Lily and Madeleine curated this month’s Stay Tuned playlist. Based in Brooklyn, NY these girls aren’t afraid to show off their Indiana roots. Their newest album, Canterbury Girls is on sale now featuring several new tracks. To kick off the release of their album, the duo is going on tour later this month and are making a stop in Indy!

Tell us about your musical background.
Madeleine: We’ve been listening to and playing music since we were little and our parents are big listeners. We sang at church and blasted pop music on the boombox while we jumped on the trampoline. It wasn’t until high school that we considered a musical career together, and even then music was still just a fun hobby. Now we’re promoting our fourth record and living in Brooklyn, NY supporting ourselves as artists.

Tell us about the mix you curated. Does it give off a type of mood? What should we be doing while listening in?
Madeleine: Personally I require music to listen to while I’m commuting. Whether I’m running errands, going to the gym, on the subway. I gotta have tunes. So I hope this playlist gives listeners a sense of purpose and calm on their commute.
Lily: Definitely commuting or going for a nice walk in a park. It’s one of my favorite things to do here in NYC, enjoying the beautiful parks!

What groups are killing the game right now?
Madeleine: Lennon Stella has totally captivated me recently. She’s in the Nashville scene and started singing with her younger sister in 2012. Now she’s released her debut EP which blew me away. Her lyrics are beautiful and heartbreaking, while her sound is synthy and fun; it’s pop music with a lot of substance.
Lily: Cardi B obviously! In the past year, she has had an absolutely meteoric rise while also staying true to herself and sharing her personality with her fans.

Tell me about your past and current music projects.
Lily: We’ve been making records since I was about 15 or 16 and our musical style and abilities have grown a lot since then. Our new record, Canterbury Girls, is definitely my favorite project that we’ve made. We got to record this record in Nashville with some amazing producers (Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk) and be super hands on with the arranging, writing and producing. it feels great to be confident, proud and in control of your work.

What are your interests outside of music?
Madeleine: We both love to knit and we do it constantly. It’s probably my most expensive hobby because I like to buy high quality yarn! Knitting is also nice to do while on the road because it’s relaxing yet productive. People often suggest I sell the things I make, but I kind of like to keep them to myself or give them as gifts.
Lily: I’ve been going to a ton of art gallery openings here in New York. Seeing local modern art is really inspiring and I’m super into visual art because it’s totally out of my wheelhouse. But like Madge said, I also love to knit and crochet!
