Stay Tuned: April 2017

PATTERN’s April curator, Jessica Oaks, is a classically trained pianist, writer, and all-over music enthusiast. With a true passion for researching undiscovered yet talented artists, each song on any of her playlists are tactfully crafted with a purpose and intent.

The playlist highlights some of her favorite tracks and albums from the last couple of months, including recent local Indianapolis releases. Follow the playlist on Soundcloud and/or Spotify for your listening pleasure![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Tell us about your musical background.

I have been tickling the ivories for more than two decades. Over the course of that time, I have fiddled around with a plethora of other instruments & played around with various talented individuals! In the past few years, the musical vice I have found myself choosing time and time again is singing! Somehow, in all of my years of living, I neglected to embrace how liberating and magical the art of vocals are!

Tell us about the mix you curated. Does it give off a type of mood? What should we be doing while listening in?

This little mix is brought to you by the illustrious sounds of interesting artists with no particular genre being showcased. Aside from the song “Crowded Places” by Banks, the playlist is remarkably upbeat. You should undoubtedly be cutting a rug and feelin’ exceptional. I suggest listening to the Banks number after busting moves during the seven songs prior.

What groups are killing the game right now?

Subjectivity at its finest. I tend find myself perpetually gravitating to the artists who somehow manage to stay true to their sound whilst delicately evolving with time — those who refuse to be bound to any genre, & who masterfully slay their art time and time again by offering the universe something different. That being said, I am incandescently ecstatic the stars have aligned and both Sylvan Esso and the Gorillaz have dropped albums today (Friday, April 28th).

What are your interests outside of music?

My interests that do not involve music include but are not limited to: folding paper cranes, cooking strange recipes, learning everything about anything I can, playing Super Smash Brothers with my fiancé, creating any art I see fit, and spending as much time as I can outside with my best friends (dogs).
