People of PATTERN: Kathy Moberly

What do your friends call you?
I haven’t had many nicknames in my lifetime. Most everyone just calls me by my first name. I do however have a past student and now very good friend who calls me her “Fairy Glamother.” I kind of love that!

How old are you (if you don’t mind me asking!)?
Age is strictly a number. That’s like putting a label on someone. In my industry, age is irrelevant. It’s about talent, drive, energy (positive v negative) and staying current. I say live your life to the fullest! No limits. If I CAN…I WILL!

Where are you from?
I grew up in a small town in Kentucky and have been a Hoosier for 27 years. In between there, I have lived in Nashville, Tennessee; Toronto, Canada; and various cities in Kentucky and Indiana.

Which neighborhood do you live in right now?
I presently live in the Center Grove area of Greenwood and have lived here for 21 years.

What do you do for a living?
I am a professional makeup artist of 37 years! My work has included working with this wonderful publication (from the very beginning), many New York Fashion Weeks, published in many national publications, national and local ad campaigns including tv and print, and worked with celebrity and high profile clients to name just a few things. I have been very blessed in my career and because of those blessings I also teach makeup artistry to aspiring makeup artists. I have been teaching for almost 20 years now and have hundreds of past students from all over the country who are rocking it hard out there in the make up world! Some of them actually travel with me to do fun things like makeup for the Super Bowl, pageants all over the country, and various large production jobs that I crew for! As if I’m not busy enough, the past four years I have started to dive into the world of permanent make up and offer Microblading, eyeliner and lips and powder brows.

What do you do as a creative outlet?
I love anything creative and involving color! My most recent project has been a complete renovation of the lower level of my house. Over the past year I have updated and changed everything myself with the exception of a little bit of tile work around my fireplace and backsplash in my kitchen and the countertops. I love faux finishes and painting (as in walls)!

What’s the most interesting thing happening in Indy right now?
The new comedy club (Helium) opening up in March downtown! I am so stoked about it! The level of talent is right up there with what you would see in NY or LA. I will be a regular!

Favorite local brewery, distillery or winery? (Or if not a drinker, then favorite eatery.)
I can’t say that I have a favorite because I love so many! But anyplace that serves a bangin’ spicy margarita will always be at the forefront for me… or a really good French whiskey.

Last trip you took?
Atlanta to take my crew and work Super Bowl LIII!

How did you hear about PATTERN?
I’ve worked on editorials since before the beginning of Pattern when it was the Fashion Collective! A lot of those covers you’ve seen have been my work.

What event are you looking forward to attending in the next couple of months?
In Indianapolis, I am looking forward to the opening of Helium. We need a great comedy club here! Abroad…I will be taking a team of hair and makeup peeps out to Lake Tahoe for a week of pageant related work! I’ve never been so I am really looking forward to that! I am also celebrating a big birthday this year so the plans are to have a girls trip to somewhere tropical and exotic and make tons of memories!
