People of PATTERN: Esther Boston

What do your friends call you?

Esther. I always wanted a nickname, but nothing ever stuck. I’ve been called “S” & “E”. But when I was a kid I really wanted to be called EJ, cause my middle name is Joy.

How old are you (if you don’t mind me asking!)?

29 (eek, too late for a 30 before 30 list?)

Where are you from?

Little Ole Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Which neighborhood do you live in right now?

Whitestown…for now.

What do you do for a living?

I photograph people and places for a living, most of my work ends up on company websites, but recently I had my work printed for a billboard!

What do you do as a creative outlet?

Well, funny you should ask, I am the staff photographer for PATTERN Magazine. So, I create fashion editorials for each issue of the magazine. I also am trying to teach myself to play the guitar.

What’s the most interesting thing happening in Indy right now?

The downtown scene. There are way more opportunities downtown in living, working, and eating!  But i am very excited about the growth in the collaborative communities, with the building out of the Circl City Industrial Complex and the new Speak Easy downtown – I see a lot more of this coming once more people see how great it is for Indy!

Favorite local brewery, distillery or winery? (Or if not a drinker, then favorite eatery.)

I really love them all, I have been to soooo many. It really is hard to pick a favorite. I went to St. Joseph’s on College recently and it was awesome! Why haven’t I heard more about that place?

Last trip you took?

New York City, my happy place! My last several trips to NYC have been for PATTERN, each time we go I get a more an more acclimated and connected with the people that make the city so great!

How did you first hear about PATTERN?

I think it was back in 2009 or 2010, Polina and I had just finished up a fashion shoot for her personal portfolio. We were packing things away and she – out of the blue – brought up her idea to start a magazine. Polina has a history of dreaming big so I wasn’t surprised by what she said. I was so excited to talk with her about it, the idea of something like this for Indy to make it’s own and to showcase the talent we have just seemed awesome.

What was your favorite PATTERN meetup and why?

My favorite PATTERN meetup? That’s a tough question, each of them have such an energy about them it’s hard to pick. But one of my favorites was when Helen Hiatt came and talked about her experiences styling Prince.

What event are you looking forward to attending this month?

Creative Mornings, always great content and a fun group of creatives to network with.
