Name: My name is Amara Kay and I am the 5’2” creative behind Five Foot Something, a fashion and lifestyle blog for petite women.
Residence: I am an Indianapolis native! I currently live in Carmel and absolutely love how close we are to all of our favorite restaurants and spots.
Occupation: I am an Assistant Brand Manager for a skincare brand by day and a petite lifestyle creator by night. My job is unique because I am involved from start to finish in our product cycle! I work with our teams on everything from product concepts, development, design, social media and marketing collateral for the brands I assist in managing. My favorite part is seeing the product come to life and hearing feedback from our customers! No greater feeling.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up just outside of Indianapolis in the small town of New Palestine. I absolutely loved going to a “smaller” school and experiencing that sense of community!
What is your earliest memory of a noticeable interest in fashion?
When I was in elementary school I started cutting out pictures in magazines of clothes, hairstyles, and colors to make collages of things I loved! My favorite thing to do was dress my Polly Pockets in different outfits and just be creative. Fast forward to middle school, my friends would always ask me to do their hair or makeup before school and I loved that! Then in high school, I would catch my two older sisters stealing my clothes, taking them to college, and calling to ask for styling advice. I think it’s always been in my blood!
Who or what influences your style?
So many things! Other creators, magazines, celebrities, brands I wear, and runway trends. I always look at what is “trending” around the world and see how I can incorporate it realistically in my life! I always like to use it as a base and then put my own spin on it.
What are your favorite Instagram accounts to follow?
So hard to choose just one as I have different ones for different areas in my life!
Describe your personal style in four words or one phrase.
Effortless, casual, versatile, affordable.
What’s your go-to item in your closet?
High-waisted boyfriend denim. I can dress them up for a night out for dinner and drinks or I can dress them down to grab lunch with my family.
Who are your favorite designers, and what do you like about their designs?
I love to look to bigger designers for inspiration and see what is going to be popular that season! Alexander Wang, Rebecca Minkoff, and FRAME are my go tos. They all have a great mix of classic, edgy, neutral options that are easy to incorporate into my everyday inspiration!
Did you ever consider leaving the Indy area? If so, what made you stay?
I would consider leaving Indy if there was an opportunity that I couldn’t refuse but I don’t see myself leaving anytime soon. My family is here, my career is here, my life is here. I am living in the moment and soaking up this season of life!
What trends are you noticing for spring fashion?
This spring is full of so many trends that I am loving! I think the biggest one is tie dye. Despite what you might think, it is an extremely versatile print. It can be colorful and fun for those who have more of a bold style or it can be muted and calm for those who have more of a natural style. More trends I’m loving: lavender/lilac colors, satin, knit dresses, square necklines, hair clips, and more!
What’s next for you? What short and long term goals are on your list?
Currently, I am focusing on growing the brands I manage as well as my own personal brand! I amped up my site, fivefootsomething.com, last summer and I’m excited to put my energy towards growing it and my social platforms. I am working with a lot of local brands to create and bring their products and services to life! Indy has so many amazing things to offer and I want to help share their story to my community. In the long term, I want to work with brands across the U.S. as well as travel!
Fashion is a way to express yourself. That is why I love it because you can make it what you want it to be! You are in control of representing yourself, your personality, and who you are.
Worst fashion trend?
Velvet tracksuits. I’d like to leave those in the past!
Best fashion trend?
High rise jeans.
Last but certainly not least, name your favorite fashion icon.
It’s tough to pick just one but I think Rebecca Minkoff would be at the top of my list. Her style is casual yet versatile, natural yet fun, and inspirational to everyday life! Not to mention she balances running a mega brand, which I love, but is also a mom, author, podcast host and more. I absolutely love not only her style but her drive!
