The house of Missoni is more than ready to put 2013 behind them. After a year that saw the loss of both their CEO and their founding patriarch, the label needed a good, solid, fall/winter collection to get them back on track. While not exactly on trend in a lot of areas, the collection Angela Missoni presented this afternoon could definitely be the beginning of a more unified direction for the label.
Wearability is a huge factor in this collection and one that is bound to be a strong selling point. There is something here for just about any woman of just about any age, from soft and comfy hooded sweatshirts to feminine-shaped and flexible dresses. The strength of the line, though, is in the separates. When shopping this collection, one is likely to find that pieces are very much interchangeable, allowing women to create looks that are unique to their own needs and lifestyle. Any time this happens, the label wins.
Colors here stay in the brown/yellow pallet for the greater portion of the collection. Angela uses unique geometric cuts and a variety of textures to create garments that are kaleidoscopes not only in terms of color, but also how they feel. This isn’t color blocking, mind you. This is Angela coloring outside the lines of what anyone else is doing this season and the results are very attractive.
Where boots have been a large part of many of the collections we’ve seen, Angela sticks with ankle-high shoes but then puts thigh-high cream-colored stockings under them. While the visual effect is similar to that of boots, especially when the different-colored tops are peeking from beneath a slit in a skirt, the comfort level is considerably different and one that opens the look to a significantly more broad audience than would boots. The stockings are also considerably more work-friendly and make the ensembles appropriate for a more wide variety of circumstances.
Belt-ridden packs designed for carry electronic devices are the only potential miss in this collection. Visually, they disturb what would otherwise be a very sleek and trim look. However, to the extent they allow one to move around without the need to carry a handbag they move prove very popular.
In all the years I’ve been watching Missoni shows, it has always been Vittorio and Angelo, and occasionally Luca, all siblings, who would attend the shows. This afternoon, their mother, Rosita, was sitting front row next to Luca. The family has really come together through last year’s tragedies and the end result is almost surely that the Missoni brand is stronger than ever. Be sure to add them to your shopping list for this fall.
