Introducing our Summer 2019 interns, our 7th summer cohort and our biggest class of summer interns ever! These eleven young creatives are looking forward to a busy summer of all things PATTERN, and we are glad to have them!

Aiden Smith

Name: Aiden Smith

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

I’m not sure exactly what I will be doing, but I’m hoping that PATTERN can help bring me to that. I hope to be doing something that I love and enjoy doing. I want to enjoy what I’m doing now, but looking forward to the next thing.

Channel Orange – Frank Ocean

What is your guilty pleasure?
Brics Ice Cream, Cheez-It Duoz and online shopping.

Savannah Calhoun

Name: Savannah Calhoun
School: Herron School of Art

If you were a talk show host, who would be your top three guests?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ariana Grande, James Charles

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done for fun?
I drove to Virginia in a 15-year-old car and it broke down while I was there but getting to drive through the West Virginia mountains in July was worth it.

Favorite item of clothing?
A pair of silver gogo boots. They’re a prized possession.

Michael Cottone

Name: Michael Cottone
School: Ball State University
Major: Photojournalism, minor in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution
Hometown: Carmel, Indiana

What is your go-to for style inspiration?
A lot of my inspiration comes from the 60’s and 70’s. I’m very inspired by the hippie movement, so I take after that. I subscribe to GQ, so I look at their magazine a lot for inspiration and stuff I would like to shoot. For my own personal style, I look at older pictures of celebrities or people from the 60’s and 70’s and compare how it fits into current trends and how I can make it my own thing.

Favorite places in Indy?
Yats and Indy CD & Vinyl

Who are the top three artists on your summer playlist?
Tame Impala, Bob Dylan and All

Them Witches. They’re like garage psychedelic. “I’m pretty vast in my music taste.”

Favorite outfits from the Met Gala?
Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Frank Ocean and Odell Beckham Jr.

Ariana Katz

Name: Ariana Katz

What Inspired you to get into web development?
I follow a lot of online publications and bloggers and I like to analyze how their personality can be noticed on their website. A lot of personality comes from presentation and that’s important in web development.

What piece of advice do you carry with you?
Always go after what you want and to stay true to yourself.

What would you like to do with web development as a dream job?
To work for a fashion publication and help build their website and help improve customer experience.

If you could have any job, where would it be?
Styling for a well-known magazine, not any in particular.

What and who are your biggest inspirations?
70’s and 90’s fashion, especially 90’s Jennifer Aniston!

What is your favorite song this month?
My Way – Frank Sinatra

What attracted you to PATTERN?
Honestly kind of the dream job thing. Working for a magazine is the goal, but it’s a plus that PATTERN is a nonprofit, and it grants the ability to impact a community (Indianapolis) that had an impact on me through something I’m passionate about.

Chad Hudson

Name: Chad Hudson
School: IUPUI
Major: Organizational Leadership
Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky

What’s your favorite piece of clothing/shoes?
Jackets are my go to. I love to use them for layering.

Who is your favorite musician?
J Cole is my favorite. It’s an artist whose music I enjoy and someone I can make a connection with. For me, making a connection with an artist is the most important part of supporting them.

What is your favorite brand?
CHNGE on Instagram they are a smaller brand with some really cool unique pieces.

What are three things you that are essential for you?
My hair products (specifically Cantu kids curling gel, a pick and a sponge to keep my hair nice and curly), a bottle of water and a backpack are essential for me to feel comfortable and have all the time in any situation.

What do you want to get out of PATTERN?
I am interested in an introduction to the fashion industry and learning what it takes to develop a brand. Also, networking and making connections in the city.

Maddie Scarpone

What item of clothing is your “staple?”
I wear my Nike Air Force 1’s all the time. They’re really comfortable and I think you can dress them up or down.

Do you have a favorite Indianapolis summer event?
I love going to Carb Day at the race track because of the live music and the food.

What got you interested in photography?
My grandpa is a photographer and I have two creative parents who got me into art. I love visual storytelling and have been interested in cameras since I was little.

Where is somewhere you have always wanted to travel?
I’ve always wanted to go to Iceland because of the variety of landscape.

What is your favorite publication?
The only magazine I have a subscription to is the New Yorker because it covers current events and it’s a literary magazine. I like how it is also about what’s going on in New York City because I’ve always wanted to live there.

What do you like to do with your free time in the summer?
I like biking around the cultural trail or the Monon.

What is your favorite spot in Indy?
I love Peppy’s. It’s a diner in Fountain Square. Hope it reopens soon!

What is your favorite genre of music?
I really like garage rock sounds, especially with female vocalists like Frankie Cosmos.
