Chill Out: Layer Up!

Now that the cold months are here, it’s hard to crawl out of bed in the morning and find something to wear. This is the time of year where people start to convince themselves that it’s too cold for fashion, but that is far from the truth! Winter is the time to play with layers and bundle up in style. Here are some easy ways to add warmth to your outfit while still looking fashionable.

Chunky Sweaters

sweatersI have a motto that I use everyday when getting dressed for the outside world: it takes just as much effort to put on a pair of jeans as it does to put on a pair of sweatpants. This statement holds true for warm knit sweaters. Chunky sweaters are just as comfortable as a sweatshirt and look much more put together. Locally, I love a good sweater from Lucky B Boutique. Pair it with a great pencil skirt for the office, layer it under a blazer for a defined look, or play up the comfort with your favorite jeans and booties. As soon as the winter months come along, everyone wants to throw away their skirts and dresses in the back of their closet. Tights are an easy way to make those pieces staples in your wardrobe once again. Now tights aren’t just limited to black or tan. Add a pop of color by pairing colored tights with dark dresses, or play up the layered look by adding socks over your tights and pairing them with boots. One of my favorite boutiques, Niche, has boot socks. The lace adds a fun pop above the boot, plus you can layer them with tights to add more warmth to your legs. (1, 2, 3, 4)

Long Gloves

Roll up the sleeves on a chambray button up and pair with long black leather gloves for a classic look. Or for a trendier look try wearing bright colored gloves like hot pink or yellow to brighten your outfit. (1, 2, 3, 4)

Statement Coat

jacketsPeople may tell you it’s what on the inside that counts but when it comes to coats that is far from the truth. Don’t let your coat damper your style. Add sophistication with a belted trench coat or a pop of color with a bright colored peacoat. One of my favorite looks for the season is the colored leather jacket. Lanie Lopez, Niche‘s new owner, says that her green leather jacket is a best seller this season. Add some edge to a feminine dress with this trend or play up the look with weathered boots and skinny jeans. (1, 2, 3, 4)

scarvesWhen layering for the winter months scarves are always my go to fashion statement. Try a thick knit infinity scarf to add style to a fitted tee or tie a silk scarf underneath a leather jacket to lighten your outfit. With so many prints and colors scarves are an easy way to add style and keep you bundled up to brace the cold. Just because it is dark outside does not mean your wardrobe needs to be! I love these bright scarf from Lucky B Boutique for a pop of color. Or if that is too bright for you, the turquoise scarf adds subtle color to any outfit. (1, 2, 3, 4)

Layer, Layer, Layer

The bottom line: you can never have too much clothing. By adding simple and thin layers you can begin to bulk up your look as well as make a statement. Try a button down layered under a crewneck, topped with a blazer, and then finish the look with a stylish peacoat. Play with mixing colors, patterns, and fabrics to add depth to your outfit.
