BSU Creative Highlight: Emily Wright

Located in Muncie, Indiana, Ball State University is a nationally ranked university with highly acclaimed programs from Architecture to Business, but it is the creatives that fly under the radar on the campus. From photography to fashion design, many Ball State students are discovering their passions and creative skills during their college careers and PATTERN is happy to highlight a handful of the young talent at BSU.

What are your creative outlets? 

Graphic Design

What made you interested in this field? 

I was always really artistic as a kid, so looking back, I can’t see myself doing anything other than something creative. My grandmother was an artist and I spent a lot of time with her and I think she’s the one I have to thank for encouraging me in this area. In high school, I became super involved in photography and yearbook. I ended up being editor of the yearbook and I think this is really what got me interested in the graphic design side of things.

What jobs/internships/student organizations are you a part of that help you pursue this field?

At Ball State, I’m currently the creative director of Unified Media, so I’m in charge of overseeing the design of the print newspaper and creating whatever else they need (websites, motion graphics, maps, etc.). I also work for Ball State’s Emerging Media Design and Development team and I design apps and websites for clients. I’m also the apparel chair for my sorority so I get to design T-shirts and all that fun stuff.

How would you describe your style?

I feel like I have a very 70’s but also 90’s-inspired wardrobe that I’ve taken a modern spin on. But really, I wear whatever makes me feel like myself so that could be almost anything.

What are three words that you would use to describe yourself?

Creative, funky, coffee enthusiast

What do you draw inspiration from?

I tend to be inspired by color. A lot of times, a whole design or project I do will be spun off of a color I found intriguing or the emotion it creates. I also get a lot of inspiration from nature and the vibe of where I’m physically at.

Who are your favorite creatives?

I find a ton of creatives on Instagram that inspire me to keep doing what I do. I really love the artist Heather Day (@heatherday) because she uses color to represent landscapes and emotions that come along with her travel. I also am inspired by Lauren Hom’s (@homsweethom) lettering and typography.

What is your favorite part about being a creative?

I love that I can be a part of creating something. I like to be able to see an outcome of work that I put in, and with graphic design I get to either see a physical or digital product that I can look at and see the whole process behind what I created in one finished piece.

What are your goals/where do you want to be in two years? 

My career goal would be to work in the creative department of a media outlet or design hub. I want to be in a position where I get to be a part of something different every day and in an environment where I’m constantly being inspired by people around me.

What is your dream job? 

I think my dream job would be the creative director of a publication or a creative company. Or an astronaut.

Other than this creative outlet, what do you like to do in your freetime?

I’m actually a scuba diver, so whenever I get the chance, I like to be underwater. I also work on my hand lettering and painting and enjoy cooking.
