Amber works toward a fun AND affordable way to stay stylish and confident and finds that inspiration through real, everyday women.
Name: Amber Hankins
Occupation: On-air co-host for WISH-TV’s Indy Style
Where did you grow up? Central Illinois
What is your earliest memory of a noticeable interest in fashion?
Oh, I remember this one well! I was probably 8 or 9, and I was in love with the classic “MC Hammer pants,” as well as the neon-colored shirts and skirts. I adored bright colors and was the total ‘80s kid in terms of fashion, complete with my bright pink sunglasses and cross-shoulder purse or fanny pack. From there, it was all about the hyper-color shirts, silk blouses and tight-rolled jeans. Even then, I liked to experiment with the newest trends in fashion!
Who or what influences your style?
Because of the nature of my job as a TV host, I like to see what other on-air female hosts are wearing nationally, take examples of what I like, leave what I don’t and then go scouring for deals of my own! I think that’s the best part with fashion, style and budgets. You can see something you love but then go find something very similar that fits both your taste and your wallet! No need for me to spend $300 on a top. I love the thrill and challenge of getting a great deal and making the most out of my wardrobe!
What are your favorite Instagram accounts to follow?
Honestly, I don’t really follow any fashion bloggers or designers but rather keep an eye on #mystyle accounts from REAL, EVERYDAY women who’ve taken pieces from let’s say Target and put together an adorable outfit, from head to toe, while also staying within their budget. Sometimes, it’s the challenge of putting your creative fashion juices to the test that I find the most appealing!
Describe your personal style in four words or one phrase.
Classy, fun, feminine, soft/light and airy
What’s your go-to item in your closet?
On the weekends: Skinny jeans, a pair of converse sneakers and a longer over-sized shirt or sweater!
For workdays: Besides it being practical for my everyday attire (holding a microphone and ear piece pack), I really love the cinched waist-belted look, especially when it’s a fun belt with a great color or texture. I also love a great statement piece like a bold necklace or bracelet. Right now, in terms of clothing, I’m loving solid colors on top and bottom or using a great heel or even lipstick as a nice pop of color!
Who are your favorite designers, and what do you like about their designs?
I tend to focus on retailers as opposed to designers, but I am loving the Jessica Simpson’s line for maternity and pumps/heels right now. Otherwise, I tend to find some great deals online at New York and Company, Target, Macy’s and more!
Did you ever consider leaving the Indy area? If so, what made you stay?
Not quite yet! I’ve only been here about four years, and it’s a place that really feels like home. It’s the great mix of city and small town, which I was really hoping for. The vibe here is down-to-earth with a small-town feel, but yet there’s still so much to do. For me, it’s sort of the best of both worlds!
What trends are you noticing for spring fashion?
The combination of pink and red, the color Lavender… and apparently, the fanny pack is back! I totally should have kept mine from when I was 9 years old. I’d be “rocking” it right now, for sure!
What’s next for you? What short and long term goals are on your list?
I’d love to stay in the Indianapolis area until my heart decides it may be time to go elsewhere. Right now though, I’m so proud to call Brownsburg home and am focusing on my work with Indy Style, my husband and almost 5-year-old daughter… and this next little one on the way!
I think fashion is taking chances, thinking “outside the box” and embracing what fits, what flatters and what makes you feel confident and beautiful. We often work with women during our Indy Style fashion segments who never know just how great a really awesome outfit can make them feel. I LOVE that. Especially when it’s affordable!! Confidence comes from within, but an adorable tunic or flattering pair of skinny jeans can sure help do the trick!
Worst fashion trend
Mud jeans. What?!
Best fashion trend
Confidence and class. Two trends that will NEVER go out of style!
Last but certainly not least, name your favorite fashion icon.
My answer here might surprise you. While I adore celebrities like Blake Lively and her glamorous, classy high-fashion looks, my favorite fashion icon is more geared toward the real, everyday woman who isn’t afraid to try new things. She’s a woman who wears her heart on her sleeve and dresses in pieces she feels confident and comfortable in, no matter her body type. She’s a woman who can feel beautiful in a designer dress and heels and just as well in sweats and a favorite tee. My definition of beauty and fashion is within. The clothes don’t make the person. The person makes the clothes.
