People of PATTERN: Kathy Davis

What do your friends call you?
Kathy, KathyD!, Natasha when I feel like being my Russian spy alter ego

How old are you (if you don’t mind me asking!)?
I cant say or Id have to kill you.

Where are you from?
Ohio! Proud to be a buckeye!!

Which neighborhood do you live in right now?
Meridian Kessler/Forest Hills. I love the walkability.

What do you do for a living?
 I design book covers!

What do you do as a creative outlet? Travel. I love big cities. NY, Chicago, San Francisco. Other countries. One of my favorite things to do is to go to a local grocery and just check out all the different products, packaging, etc. Its an easy way to get a sense of the locals. I also love to follow Remodelista and Dwell Magazine for their modern architecture and interior coverage. My dream is to build a minimalist box on a plot of coastal land somewhere. Just havent figured out which coast yet

What’s the most interesting thing happening in Indy right now?
I think its the growing tech scene (ex: the Iron Yard opened a coding school here, in conjunction with some influence from Studio Science—I think) and the real estate scene. All the development going on all over downtown. I dont even recognize downtown anymore. Its exciting because it all means the city is growing and attracting people and talent. Walkable urban living is where its at.

Favorite local brewery, distillery or winery? (Or if not a drinker, then favorite eatery.)
Im not a big beer fan, but love wine with dinner. Delicia is really one of my favorite places to go, due to the killer interior space. I love being in that space, and dining out is so much about the space for me, as well as the food. I feel happy when I go in there and energized. Plus its just down the street from my house, so that makes it even better!

Last trip you took?
NYC in June with my friend Laura. We went to Momofuko, and it was the best meal I had there that week. A pork bun and some ramen. I went to the Whitney Museum and the MOMA—so cool to see the Warhol Campbells soup cans series in real life! And I spent a few days working out of the Wiley corporate headquarters with my team there. I’m lucky to have an amazingly cool boss, and  I feel like I fit right in with the team. I could live in NY.

How did you first hear about PATTERN?
Polina Osherov had a magazine idea, so we talked about it and decided to work together and make it! Just do it! We did.

Favorite PATTERN event and why?
I really enjoyed an early PATTERN launch when it was in the empty space next to the PATTERN store on Mass ave. A few of my friends came with me, and it was just fun to be in a raw space with all the potential of what it would become. All the young beautiful people who were featured in that issue were dressed up and sipping wine. It felt like a gallery opening. Although the launch party at the IMS pagoda was pretty spectacular as well.

My beautiful, kind, and patient husband lost his battle with cancer last summer, and I am stepping away from design director for PATTERN to focus on raising my daughter and sorting out our lives as we move forward without Jim.
