PATTERN’s May curator, Walker Mcelrath, has been a music enthusiast since he can remember. He recently began hosting his own show on Ball State University’s radio and is excited to grow his show and audience as he becomes more involved in the industry.
The playlist highlights some of his favorite tracks and albums from the last couple of months, including recent local Indianapolis releases. Follow the playlist on Soundcloud and/or Spotify for your listening pleasure!
Tell us about your musical background.
I can’t play any instruments or anything like that, but I’ve always been a fan of music. My favorite thing about music is learning the back stories of my favorite bands and songs. An example is when Robert Plant was writing the lyrics to “Stairway to Heaven” – he felt like he was possessed by the Devil.
Tell us about the mix you curated. What’s the mood? What should we be doing while listening in?
The mix I put together is a snapshot of what I’m into today. When I was putting together this playlist, I was blown away by how many cool songs that have came out not only this year but in the last three months. While listening to this playlist, people should be into how cool this year has been and is going to be at least in terms of music.
What groups are killing the game right now?
Robin Pecknold and Fleet Foxes are back after seven years, and it’s like they never left. I’m incredibly excited for the new album. In terms of rap, it’s still all about Kendrick Lamar.
What music projects are you currently involved in?
I’ve been doing a radio show for about four or five months now on 91.3 FM WCRD. It started out pretty rough, but I’ve slowly been getting the hang of it. It has become my favorite thing to do every week. It’s called The Journey because it is a play off of my name (Walker), but I’ve started to do a segment on my show where I play a really long song, and I say ‘That’s The Journey.’ It airs Wednesdays from 11 AM to 2 PM. It’s been getting better every week, so I would love if people gave it a shot.
What are your interests outside of music?
I enjoy watching pro wrestling. I’m also really into movies, and I love a good one hour drama. I’m mostly a people person, so I enjoy spending time with other people whether it’s my girlfriend, my friends, or my family. I love having loved ones around me.
