MFW: BLUMARINE S/S 2014

You knew it had to be there somewhere. The Queen of the Roses, Anna Molinari, had to have some secret stash of flowers from which she constantly draws bouquet after bouquet of loveliness. This morning, Ms. Molinari pulled back the curtain and let us into that secret garden of delight and what we found was, to no surprise, beauty everywhere we turned.

For those not familiar with the Blu family of fashion, do not be confused. As sweet and innocent as the Blugirl line is, Blumarine is much more adult, more sensual, and unapologetically provocative. This is not a line to approach with timidity or modesty. The Blumarine woman is secure, confident, and unafraid.

As we entered the garden, we were greeted by white lace on white leather. A cropped jacket fastened at the shoulder over a sheer blouse, and a white leather pencil skirt covered in white lace. Ms. Molinari soon adds touches of red and blue to her rose prints, but by the sixth look has gone completely sheer with the blouse relying only on the careful placement of white roses to keep one from being arrested.

When I say there is a lot of sheer in this collection, I mean practically every piece in the collection has some sheer element to it, even if its only in the sleeves. Frequently, what’s not sheer is nude colored so that it looks, at first glance, much more revealing than it actually is.

Moving further into the collection, Anna adds delicate beadwork to her dresses, still utilizing the combination of sheer fabric with nude foundations to create a provocative aesthetic. The silhouettes through this section are very fitted so as to give the impression that the beads are fastened directly onto the body.

Continuing through the garden, the look goes briefly casual as tuxedo jackets are introduce in yellow and red. paired with tight leather pants. That look doesn’t last long, though, before we’re back to sheer tops and leather skirts, this time in black. A tiny white polka dot pattern soon gives way to pearl beads on black sheer. The visual effect is ethereal, never mind the fact the look would likely get you arrested in any Midwest city.

As with Blugirl, there are no US stores that carry the Blumarine brand, which is genuinely sad. There is so much here that is beautiful and appealing. However, one can shop online via the brand’s web site and enjoy bringing the garden into their own wardrobe.
