NYFW: DIANE VON FURSTENBERG S/S 2014

Diane Von Furstenberg (DVF) is a fashion legend. From showing up in New York with a suitcase full of dresses to becoming the most powerful woman in fashion, DVF has created an empire that sets an example of achievement for women around the world. Diane’s involvement in charities such as Vital Voices is legendary. Her clothes are sold in 70 countries worldwide and as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America she has been directly involved in fostering new talent and protecting designers against counterfeit.

For someone who has been in fashion so long, expectations from one season to the next are high. Questions as to whether or not she can still bring a fresh and exciting collection sit quietly in the back of everyone’s mind, even if they don’t dare speak it out loud.  After viewing her spring/summer line, however, I don’t think there’s any question that DVF is still strong and full of energy.

The theme of this season’s show was “Be your own oasis,” and to emphasize that theme Diane sent a collection of prints down the runway that were exotic, dreamy, and beautiful. Color palette? Go ahead and dump the whole crayon box on the table. From mixed animal prints to desert patterns and abstract designs, the runway seemed alive with bright and fluid colors. Prints were dramatic. Solids were bold. There wasn’t a boring piece in the entire set.

While DVF prides herself on creating clothes every woman can wear, there are bound to be some favorites this season. A blue/white patterned variation on her classic wrap dress, with lace at the hem, is almost certain to be an instant hit the moment it arrives in stores. Crop tops with skirts in both solids and patterns are fun, flirty and flattering. Maxi dresses with skirts that flatter a fuller, curvier figure may well become ubiquitous across the continent come spring.

At the end of the show, Diane came out in one of her most colorful print dresses and danced around the catwalk to a Mary J. Blige soundtrack, displaying as much energy and excitement as do her clothes. This is a wonderful season for DVF and we look forward to many more to come.
