Local Designer Creates Wearable Art

We all think of fashion as wearable art, but one local designer has taken this concept to a new level with psnob handbags. Rebecca Robinson’s Psnob (pronounced snob) handbag collection takes large-scale art directly off the wall, and turns the pieces into one-of-a-kind handbags.

Robinson hand paints mural-size canvas compositions, using various mediums and techniques, and then varnishes the works with a special patent-pending coating she invented. The varnish guarantees the integrity of the artwork is upheld when it is cut and sewn into a custom handbag.

“I named the company psnob to emphasize the opposite of ‘snooty’ but being proud of your individuality. A psnob is anyone who has an appreciation of art, fashion, culture and life experiences,” Robinson said. “Psnob was started with a simple idea that has not only allowed people to look at art with a different perspective, but to also embrace the beauty of being unique. psnob…Perfectly, Symbolizing, New, Original and Bold!”

With psnob, customers can invest in fashion handbags that are both exclusive and art savvy. After several years of trial and error and extensive research, Robinson has embarked on a fashion accessory that is truly remarkable.

“Creating art has always been my first love,” she said. “My philosophy is, if you put your heart and soul into something, an amazing sense of fulfillment will follow.”

Inspired by the many ways art can be admired and interpreted, Robinson wants to be known for going against the grain, and finding new ways to showcase her work.

“The benefit of having my artwork made into a purse is the purse can travel around the world where people can admire it at all angles and settings,” Robinson said. “Limiting my artwork to just being hung on a wall is no longer an issue.”

Psnob fans can even order entirely custom bags from the collection. Dubbed the Ultima, the bag is an original artwork-turned-handbag. Following a consultation with the customer, Robinson develops a design with the specific wearer in mind.

“From pockets to the lining, to the type of hardware, the customers can create their handbag specifications to their liking,” Robinson said. “Whether the order is a unique line of limited edition purses for a group or organization, or a celebrity who wishes to create a collection in their name, the psnob Ultima is an amazing process for creating custom orders.”

Robinson studied fashion design at Bauder Fashion College in Atlanta. After receiving a degree in Fashion and Marketing, she attended North Carolina Central University where she studied Visual Communications. Her background has given her a foundation in not only fashion, but also art history, advertising, printmaking, and photography. She was born and raised in Indianapolis, but lived in Atlanta for 15 years. She recently returned to Indy to be a part of the growth in the art community and raise art awareness in the city.

Psnob will be featured at RAW Natural Born Artists: Discovery, an independent showcase for local artists from 7-11 p.m. on February 14 at Bartini’s downtown. Robinson will show a selection of purses, as well as wall art at the exhibit. Tickets can be purchased at RAWartists.org/indianapolis/discovery for $10.
