H&M is bringing another high fashion label to the common people. Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M has been the force to bring some big names to the fast fashion world of H&M. H&M has seen guest collections from Madonna, Mathew Williamson, Roberto Cavalli, Jimmy Choo, and Lanvin to just mention a few. This November 19, one of the most talked about collaborations will launch with VERSACE (Also referred to as “The Very Best of Versace”). Donatella Versace has selected some of the best pieces from the archive. Donatella said about the H&M collaboration:
“The collection for H&M is the essence of Versace. For the collaboration we’ve brought back from the archives, as well as from more recent collections, some of the icons of Versace, such as the bright prints, the Greek key and daring cuts. I can’t wait to see how H&M’s wide audience will make these pieces their own.”
Only 300 stores worldwide will be carrying the Versace capsule collection. Sadly the two Indianapolis locations are not one of those 300 stores. Chicago’s H&M on Michigan Avenue is the closest location. (For a complete list of stores check out the website)
“Versace’s collection for H&M is a moment in fashion. It is full of strong pieces that stand out, with colours, prints and cuts that are clean and precise. The women’s collection is flattering and full of dresses, while the men’s collection is very sophisticated. When I think about Versace I think of iconic items. With this collection for H&M we’ve got the essence of Versace.” -Margareta van den Bosch, Creative advisor a H&M
The entire Versace for H&M collection has an energy that makes you wanna dance, or at least have a cocktail in hand. (I posted the entire lookbook on my personal blog) The pieces in the collection are not pieces that can be worn to afternoon tea, unless also invited is Kanye West and Nicki Minaj. The collection is full of bold pattern, bright color, and dynamic detail. The collection represents the iconic traits that has made Versace so recognizable. Women’s dresses have cutouts. The Greek key is back to accent many of the leather pieces for men and women. Don’t worry there is pattern on pattern all over the collection. Although individually the pieces look very gaudy, when layered together the way only Versace can the pieces look fantastic. Beware shoppers this collection is not for amateurs. Many of the pieces will need the proper styling touch of a fashionista in the know, unless you buy the full outfit head to toe. The price range for the pieces are $20 to $299. The normal H&M shopper, who has never experienced a guest designer collection, might be surprised to see such prices. The prices won’t keep the Versace lovers away.
Unlike Target, H&M understands how to properly handle a designer launch of this popularity. (I am of course referring to the Missoni for Target launch) So shoppers be prepared! You will have to get to Chicago early enough to get a good spot in the line. Many people camp-out in hopes of being one of the lucky firsts to shop the collection. H&M has learned from past launches and now have a pretty good system. People in line get color coded bracelets with a scheduled time to shop the women’t collection. When it is your groups turn to shop, you will have 15 minutes to shop. So you better go in with a plan!
I worked with H&M for 5 years, and every time a guest collection would be prepared to launch I would have to answer as to why Indianapolis was not receiving it. Trust me, many people were upset that Indianapolis was not one of the top 300 stores globally to receive the collection. Let’s be real, Indianapolis, what would be your response if you saw a guy wearing the geometric black & white pant and shirt combination? Ladies, could you see yourself walking down the street wearing one of the bold pattern-on-pattern Versace looks. For some of us it would be completely acceptable and appreciated, and others wouldn’t get it and would probably laugh. Indianapolis has quite a ways to go before we can openly accept an iconic Versace piece walking down the street.First, I think we need to get over the hurdle of wearing denim shorts and ill-fitting dress shirts. Although I would love to get the Versace leather jacket in my own city, at least I now have an excuse to make a Chicago shopping trip. To those planning shopping trip to Chicago, please tweet me about your Versace launch adventures. (You know you can tweet me @_jeremiah_ – and also be sure to add @Patternindy. We would love to hear about your escapades.)
My recommendation for the majority of you is to use the online pictures as inspiration. You can check out the collection at HM.com. You might not be able to get the exact Versace pieces but you can challenge yourself to find similar pieces to up your style game.
